Exactly 6 euros a month for a small server in Germany. When I order, I do not commit for long up front and I do not pay double for nothing. On the cloud account behind the AI model I also set a spending lock of 100 dollars a month.
Two clients of mine ordered their first server together with me, over screen share and step by step. With one of them I also had to explain why an AI agent belongs on a server at all.
The short answer is that an agent running on your laptop is gone as soon as the laptop is off. On a server it runs independently of your own computer, which is how I set up every AI agent I build. I run my agency from Dubai for clients in the German speaking market, and below I cover what the server costs, what I watch when I order it, and what I set on the cloud account so nothing runs away.
A small server in Germany runs around the clock for 6 euros a month
If you normally work in the Claude app on your own computer, you see everything run while the machine is on. Switch the laptop off and nothing runs any more, and that is what a VPS server is for. It is a computer that is always on, so I put every AI agent I build on a server.
With one client I ordered the server on her screen, using the cheap plan and the Falkenstein location in Germany. At the end of the order the price appeared: exactly 6 euros a month. The AI agents we build for her all run on that small server. I can recommend the provider I use myself, and to be honest I am very happy with it. On location I am clear: I take a server location in Germany, without exception.
Do not commit for 24 months, and do not pay double
With the other client, the cheap plan at the provider was fully booked. The next plan was available but cost double, and paying double for nothing is not worth it. So we looked at a second provider, which is also good, though double is not necessary there either.
At that provider the low price only applies if you commit for a long time. I would not commit for 24 months, because you have to pay in advance. When we switched the period to one month, the price landed at the same level as the first provider. That settled it, because then the first provider is the best choice, and we stayed with it. Payment should run monthly, whereas the second provider would have charged yearly.
The cloud account gets a spending lock of 100 dollars
For this client the AI model itself runs through a cloud account that I set up the day before our call. I built a spending lock into it so that no more than 100 dollars a month can pile up if something goes wrong, which it should not. That matters to me with all my clients, and the lock was part of the setup from the start. It is the last safeguard in case something runs differently than planned.
On top of that I set up a notification that sends an email when costs look unusual, and the client already had such a message from the account in her inbox. I also advised her to switch on two-factor authentication for the main login of the account. On the other login I had already done that.
Conclusion: 6 euros for the server, 100 dollars as the ceiling for the model
What does a server for an always-on AI agent cost? In my case 6 euros a month for a small server in Germany, with no long commitment and no surcharge for nothing. The agent runs there independently of the client's laptop, the plan can be paid monthly, and the ceiling for the model sits in the account from day one. Together these keep the running costs of an agent manageable.
The cloud account for the AI model gets a spending lock of 100 dollars a month and a warning for unusual costs. One next step if you are planning an agent: decide before the first order how much you are willing to spend per month at most, and enter that limit in the cloud account before the agent makes its first request.
